Trusting the vine, the door, the truth, the way

Oh, this one is easy, or should be. The question is simply who do you trust? Or perhaps, in what do you trust?

The church is wonderful in this area. We trust God. Period. Right?

Then we take out 30-year loans from the bank.

Ironically it seems this presidential race will be about which of the candidates we trust more. Or in some cases, which do we trust less? Far too often, too, where we go to church depends on which preacher we follow -- hence trust -- the most. If someone is a megachurch preacher, well, success breeds success, doesn't it? And the pastor becomes a celebrity.

The Bible talks about trust in a round-about way sometimes. Like this: "Pushed to the wall, I called to God; from the wide open spaces, he answered. God’s now at my side and I’m not afraid; who would dare lay a hand on me? God’s my strong champion; I flick off my enemies like flies. Far better to take refuge in God than trust in people; Far better to take refuge in God than trust in celebrities."

See, the problem is no one trusts the church to be the church anymore. We take far too much time showing the world that we're just like them when we're call to be apart from the world. In the world, not of the world I believe Jesus said.

We were called by the Lord to make disciples of Jesus Christ. Period.

To do so we must trust in one source and one source alone. We must trust in him to work miracles in us, through us, with us. Him. God. Jesus. Holy Spirit. All in one.

Look, trusting God is simply believing he loves us. He wants the best for us. He's good. He has power to help us. AND he wants to help us. He wants us to trust him more than a bank, the stock market, the government.

In John 15:5 Jesus says that apart from him we can do nothing. We need to lean on him for help in all circumstances. We need to learn from him, absorb his teachings, listen to him in prayer.

Trust him.

Because the opposite of John 15:5 is that with him we can do anything.
